Kathmandu, April 7, 2023 - The establishment of the South Asian Regional Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (SARC-CAMH) took a significant leap forward during a groundbreaking inception workshop held on April 6th and 7th at the Radisson Hotel in Kathmandu. Attended by distinguished experts and stakeholders from across the South Asian region, the workshop marked a pivotal moment in addressing the mental health challenges faced by children and adolescents.
Over the course of two dynamic days, participants engaged in discussions and deliberations aimed at shaping the future trajectory of SARC-CAMH. A key decision emerged from the workshop, which was to establish a regional office in Nepal. The selection of Nepal as the hub for coordinating efforts and fostering collaboration among participating countries was based on its central location and demonstrated commitment to promoting mental well-being.
The workshop garnered enthusiastic support from delegates representing Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and other South Asian nations. Deliberations focused on the urgent need to prioritize child and adolescent mental health, recognizing the far-reaching consequences of neglecting this critical aspect of overall well-being.
One of the workshop's highlights was the appointment of Dr. Arun Raj Kunwar as the team lead for SARC-CAMH. Dr. Kunwar, a renowned child and adolescent psychiatrist from Nepal, brings a wealth of expertise and experience to this role. His unwavering dedication and visionary approach to transforming mental health services for young individuals received unanimous support from the workshop attendees.
Another significant outcome of the workshop was the resolution to seek funding and collaboration from likeminded organizations to support the establishment and operations of SARC-CAMH. Participants acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge and stressed the importance of collective efforts to secure resources and expertise. The delegates pledged to engage international organizations, donor agencies, and philanthropic foundations in their pursuit of support, ensuring the sustainable functioning of the center.
Furthermore, the workshop identified key areas of focus for SARC-CAMH, including research and data collection, policy advocacy, training and capacity-building, and community-based interventions. These areas will form the foundation for a comprehensive strategy to address the unique mental health needs of children and adolescents in the region.
The inception workshop concluded on an optimistic note, with participants expressing their determination to create a South Asian region where the mental well-being of children and adolescents is prioritized. The establishment of SARC-CAMH represents a significant stride toward achieving this goal, with the regional office in Nepal acting as a catalyst for change and collaboration.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Arun Raj Kunwar emphasized the need for sustained commitment and the involvement of multiple stakeholders to propel the vision of SARC-CAMH forward. He stated, "Together, we can transform the mental health landscape for children and adolescents in the South Asian region. Let us work in unity to ensure their well-being and provide them with the support they need to thrive."
As the workshop came to a close, a sense of anticipation permeated the atmosphere, as the establishment of SARC-CAMH brought hope to millions of children and adolescents in South Asia. The collective efforts, unwavering dedication, and collaborative spirit witnessed during the inception workshop have paved the way for a brighter future, where mental health is recognized as an essential component of overall well-being.
